A stroke occurs when either too much blood or too little blood disrupts blood flow to part of the brain. This deprives brain tissue of necessary oxygen and nutrients. Stroke and heart disease share many of the same risk factors, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, physical inactivity and being obese. In fact, several types of heart disease are risk factors for stroke, and stroke is risk factor for heart disease.
